Choosing Appropriate Fasteners for Valve Applications

The fastener with the perfect strength for your application is easy to find, whereas the fastener with the right corrosion resistance is a little difficult to find. If corrosion cracking has to be resisted, the greatest level of resistance must be provided. A small fastener can be used for everything. Different applications necessitate the use of various fasteners to complete the task. But, with so many fasteners available, how do you know which one would be best for valve applications. It is critical to select the proper alloy fastener.

  1. Stress corrosion cracking:

Types:

  • Liquid metal embrittlement
  • Caustic embrittlement
  • Hydrogen sulphide HSSC
  • Chloride SCC

The normal level of corrosion resistance is offered by austenitic stainless steel fasteners. because of corrosive properties of carbon steel fasteners, stainless steel fasteners are required by many marine plant projects.

To reduce the normal rate of corrosion in alloy steel fasteners, a protective coat is applied on it. The plating can be of cadmium or zinc.

  1. Cadmium and zinc plating:

For long term corrosion resistance, carbon steel is galvanized with zinc or cadmium. This process of making the steel corrosion resistant works when there aren’t very elevated temperatures. Zinc and cadmium can work with low melting points.

These are the points to keep in mind while choosing the ideal fastener for valve applications.
