Effective Ways for Enhancing the Durability of Stainless Steel Fasteners

The most economical option for fasteners, undoubtedly, is stainless steel fasteners. This is so because they are resistant to corrosion and last long. But as we know, they may corrode in the long run and you may have to spend on them after that. If the employees are not trained with proper habits about handling the system, a perfectly working system might break down.

Here are some good habits that will make stainless steel fasteners last longer:

Proper tools for slotting:

Appropriate tools should be used for slotting of holes that are supposed to fit the mechanical properties of stainless steel fasteners. The pull-out strength and holding capacity should be apt. If the fasteners are wrongly set, they will start to unscrew quickly and have a very bad effect on the entire system.

Standard grades of stainless steel:

The best grades of stainless steel fasteners are 304 and 316. They are the most commonly used grades for fasteners. As the grade number suggests, 316 is more resistant to corrosion than 304. They are pricier than other grades available in the market, but they are cost-effective in the long run because they last longer.

Proper cleaning schedule:

The cleaning practices of the employees matter a lot. If regular cleaning is not taking place, the dust settles on the parts and the entire system’s fastening tools might have to be replaced.

Lubrication of threads:

The phenomenon is known as galling, which means the wear and tear of fasteners due to getting rubbed against the sliding surfaces should be avoided. To avoid this, the fasteners should be lubricated.

Electrochemical Polishing:

The protective top layer on the surface of stainless steel is chromium oxide. This layer diminishes. Electrochemical polishing is done to make this layer thicker, which in turn prevents the stainless steel from corroding.

Scheduled monitoring:

If certain wear and tear in the machinery is not looked after or paid attention to, the fasteners start losing their grip. Irreversible damage can be caused to the whole system if the damage is left unseen for a long time. Reliable employees should be appointed to do this work regularly.
