What are Flow Meters used for?

The flow meters are used to determine the volumetric flow rate of liquids. These meters measure liquids, gases, and fluids in terms of volumetric flow rate and mass flow rate. There are many types of flow meters which are accurately estimating and indicating the measurements.

1.   Coriolis Flow Meters

Coriolis flowmeter is highly accurate, and it is most commonly used to measure a variety of products like natural gas and crude oil. The main benefit of this flow meter is that it measures the mass flow rate than its volume. Typically, the Coriolis flowmeter is suitable to use with pipes of different diameters. This type of flow meter is expensive than other metering systems, but it requires low maintenance compared to other flow meters.

2.   Positive Displacement Flow Meters

Positive displacement meters are used for gas flow measurements and perfectly suitable to use in a wide variety of applications, including industrial, commercial, and residential. This type of flow meter has two types, such as diaphragm based and rotary based. One of its advantages is that it is best in dealing with a steady flow rate in a pipeline, which has a diameter of 10 inches or smaller. 3.   Vortex Flow Meters

The vortex flow meter is one of the most versatile flow meters, which are most widely used to measure liquid, gas, and steam flows. This flow meter offers many benefits for flow determination like it is easy to install without impulse lines; it doesn’t have moving parts, less maintenance, and less leak potential. It offers low power consumption and easy to use in remote areas. These flow meters are unique because they are perfect to use in liquids, gasses, steam, and caustic applications. These are suitable to use in high process pressures as well as temperatures, which make them able to use in the Oil and Gas industry.

4.   Turbine Flow Meters

The turbine flow meter is a mechanical rotor that is connected to a shaft inside the pipe. It is suitable to measure the volume of fluid, gas, or vapor. It indicated the volume of the material, which is passing through the pope with the use of signals, sensors, and transmitters. These flow meters provide more accurate results when the material is gas or any other substance with no debris. Turbine flow meters are reasonable and widely used in Oil and Gas industry because of its accuracy.

5.   Ultrasonic Flow Meters

Ultrasonic flow meter calculates the velocity of the fluid by using sound waves. This flow meter measures the velocity of the fluid inside as well as outside the pipe. The ultrasonic flow meters are designed especially for crude oils and suitable to use inline for pipes with 20-inch measurement. It also needs low maintenance.

6.   Thermal Flow Meters

Thermal flow meter computes the speed of heat dissipation as it is directly inserted into a gas flow stream. This thermal flow meters are perfect to use for gas measurements. These flow meters are the most suitable when the composition or the temperature is reduced and when the level of accuracy is required in acceptable parameters.

7.   Differential Flow Meters

Differential flow meters measure the volume of the flow, which passes through the pipe. These cost-effective flow meters are offering the right measurements of every fluid. To get the precise readings of any liquid or gas, differential flow meters have to combine with additional sensors for various factors like temperature, pressure, composition, and density of the gas. This type of flow meter is not so perfect to use in the oil and gas industry because of additional sensors; the measurements can vary.
