What kind of metal can be forged?

For the forging process, there are a lot of suitable metals that make the process easy. Here are the suitable metals which can be forged.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a group of metals that includes higher levels of chromium and many other alloying ingredients that enhances corrosion resistance property and many beneficial attributes. Some types of stainless steel forgings can be hardened by applying heat treatment. Because of good impact resistance and durability, Stainless Steel is widely used in many industries. Many grades like 304, 316, 317, and 321 of Stainless Steel are suitable for the forging process.

Alloy Steel

Alloy steel is an iron-based material that includes many different alloying elements to enhance beneficial features. Alloy Steel can be alloyed with metals like silicon, molybdenum, nickel, chromium, vanadium boron, and manganese. This material is shaped by using hot forging processes. Because of alloying materials, alloy steel can enhance the properties like robustness, rigidness, and excellent resistance to wear.

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is a mixture of carbon and steel. There are different types of carbon steels, which depend on low to the high amount of carbon. ASTM A105 Carbon Steel and ASTM A350 LF2 Carbon Steel are also can be forged. The forging of carbon steel can enhance properties like hardness, ductility, strength, and impact resistance.

Tool Steel

Tool Steel has a variety of carbon and alloy steels, which enhance qualities such as strength, toughness and make it perfect for forming tools. Forging tool steel affects a product that maintains its cutting edge by offering resistance against deformation and abrasion at greater temperatures. Tool steel are availabe in group A, D, H, L, M, O, and S. All these types of tool steel can be forged for different purposes.

Nickel Alloy

Nickel alloys have many elements besides nickel, depending on required characteristics. Nickel alloy is remarkably flexible and hence can be easily forged to get excellent properties. Hastelloy, Inconel, and Monel are Nickel-based alloys.

Superalloy

A superalloy is also called a high-performance alloy. This alloy is suitable for forging. Superalloy offers properties such as excellent resistance against corrosion, creep, and oxidation, mechanical strength, and suitable to use at elevated temperatures. Superalloy can be chosen as per the alloying element to produce specific properties.

Inconel

Inconel has superior resistance against corrosion and heat. It is nickel-based superalloys that contain varying amounts of iron and chromium. Inconel offers resistance against stress rupture, thermal fatigue, creep, and oxidation, which is perfect to use in applications such as gas turbines, chemical processing, heaters, furnace components, etc.

Monel

Monel is a mixture of copper and nickel. It is easy for forging and can be hardened by heat treatment. Monel is offering resistance against corrosion and acidic media, which is suitable to use in marine applications, saltwater environments, and chemical processing.

Titanium

Titanium can be forged to fabricate different products such as disks, hubs, flanges, rolled rings, shafts, bars, and blocks. This material offers superior properties like strength and lightweight. Titanium is generally used where high operating temperature, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance are the basic needs.
