Depending on the situation, pipes can be supported from above or below. Several common pipe support clamps and hangers can be installed to hold down the pipe for thermal and dynamic stresses and sustain dead weight loads. These supports take pressure off the pipes because straining them too much could result in leaks or fractures, leading to many other issues.

Since thousands of designs have been employed for specific applications, the pipe support clamps and hangers design mostly rests on the imagination of the engineer and designer. For purposes of design, production, fabrication, and installation, certain codes and standards are referenced:

The following are the main codes and standards for pipe hangers and supports:

To suspend high-temperature horizontal stationary insulated lines, yoke-type pipe clamps are necessary. This clamp is suggested for insulated lines between 4″ and 6″.

A horizontal hotline with thick insulation is suspended using three-bolt pipe clamps, which are made to support loads of moderate size. The pipe clamp can be attached using the three-bolt design outside the insulation. The three-bolt pipe clamp should be chosen based on the load and the line’s temperature.

Two-Bolt Clamps are recommended for supporting horizontal lines where little or no insulation is required on the pipeline and the loads to be transported are not of a high entity.

The split-type adjustable swivel ring is advised for suspending stationary non-insulated pipelines. The self-locking adjustable swivel ring keeps the pipe’s optimum pitch while preventing loosening by line vibration.

Without hanger roads, vertical stationary lines should be suspended or restrained using an extension or riser pipe clamps. The pipe load is transferred by placing both clamp’s ears on a structural member or floor surface. This pipe clamp’s recommended maximum operating temperature is 343°C.

Extension split pipe clamps are advised to support non-insulated horizontal lines in conjunction with the pipe nipple. This clamp is specifically designed for use on compressor or refrigeration piping that is subject to vibration. The clamp’s inside structure gives the pipe a firm grasp. The tapering inner ring cannot trap condensed moisture.
